For this initiative, which fills a gap in our cultural history, we were awarded funding from the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region. In 2013, the year of the 10th anniversary of the founding of PEN Trieste, the events were included in a presentation of the 10-Year Anthology and in a meeting attended by guests from other PEN Centres and the presentation of the 10-Year Brochure. The Province of Trieste and the Municipality of Trieste contributed in various ways to these events. In Spring 2014, we had the pleasure of hosting Takeaki Hori, then International Secretary of PEN International, in Trieste. He met the Vice-President of the Province and the Councillor for Culture of the City of Trieste. In addition, he gave a speech to a large group of students at Dante Alighieri Secondary School and attended one of the first working sessions of PEN Trieste Lettori (PEN Trieste Readers).
This time of somewhat painful waiting proved necessary to learn not to turn away when confronted with God’s silences. After a 6-year search I received the answer I was waiting for. In a prayer group a video on a ”new community” in France was making the rounds. A German/New Zealand couple in touch with “that community” in Germany desired the Community to be known in NZ I discovered young people experiencing an intense life of prayer and what’s more there were consecrated artists present ! That is how I discovered the “Community of the Beatitudes”.

At each Congress, time is reserved for proposals submitted by the Centres, with a view to defining objectives, development and management. There is also time allotted for resolutions, which are voted on by the Annual General Meeting and embody the views held in matters falling within the competence of PEN International, in particular freedom of expression and human rights. These are important not only to the individual Centre sponsoring the resolution but to the whole organisation. Neither should the multi-ethnic dimension be forgotten because in Trieste the population of Italian origin and the Slovenian community live together with the historic Serbian, Croatian, Greek, Jewish, German, Swiss and French communities. This is in addition to an unknown number of people of other origins, religions and languages, some of whom arrived in previous generations, others in more recent times. Many of our facilities are open to the public, providing real-life training for our students whilst you benefit from fantastic experiences.
I grew up in the faith thanks to very religious parents. I was able to follow the catechetical training of my parish but I never thought of becoming a priest or a religious. It was only at the age of 22, after my baccalaureate, that I asked myself the question of a vocation !

The small town of Bled, by the lake of the same name, has hosted two PEN International Congresses, in 1965 and 2005. Each year the annual conference of the writers of PEN Slovenia hosts the Writers for Peace Committee whose 50th meeting took place in 2018. Since 2003 we have never missed this conference and often bring delegations comprising several people. The Bled Conferences serve as the backdrop to the meeting of PEN Slovenia writers and the WiPC meetings, but also provide a space for informal meetings between representatives of many Centres in advance of Congress. In 2013, Bled was also chosen as the location of one of the two annual in-person meetings of the Board of PEN International.
Depths can be set anywhere in between the pre-set levels. The perfect compromise for this situation was a pool with a movable floor, eliminating the need to choose between swimming or football – they now have both.

Over there, from childhood, my heart was filled with a mad desire for happiness but, growing up, I no longer sought it in God ! I put my heart into my studies and the goals I had concerning my artistic career. The influence of individualistic thought had cooled the impulse of gratuity in me. My relationship with others was becoming self-interested. Sometimes I felt like I was forgetting “something” essential. – I saw all the states of life gathered there, praising and adoring the Good God, in a profound joy. To me, all this was like an anticipation of Heaven;– I saw brothers and sisters all sharing a great desire for holiness, and seeking, each with his or her weaknesses, to live first of all the radicality of charity.
- We received positive feedback, but not in the age range that we were interested in.
- Air Tahiti and Air Moana operate a weekly 3 hour and 20 minute direct flight from Papeete.
- Its purpose was to serve as a call to adhere to the values of PEN International.
- I invite them to take time for God, in a retreat or a stay in the Community abroad, especially in Israel where I am currently assigned.
- Depths can be set anywhere in between the pre-set levels.
- This prize, which is sponsored and funded by PEN Trieste, is awarded on 8 March.
Not only can the family close the pool and have a full lawn for football kick-around and cricket practice, when the pool is open, they can adjust the water depth to suit different swimmers’ needs. For instance, the youngest child does not like to be out of her depth, so the pool floor has been pre-set at a perfect paddling height, with a 1.5m height for adults and more adventurous older children.

In this country we are surrounded by the liturgy of the different religious communities (Eastern Rite, Judaism…), not to mention the muezzins who call the Muslims to their prayers. This stimulates young people to look for a rhythm of prayer for their lives. At the Community, I was dazzled by the beauty of the liturgy, which is one of the reasons why I finally discerned to continue my path towards the Priesthood.

XIII. Actions menées avec PEN International
Following my one-week stay in July, I entered in October. What touched me from the outset, in this community, is the love of the brothers and sisters for the Lord and the mutual charity experienced, as in a family. I met the Community of the Beatitudes during an evening prayer meeting organized by the Charismatic Renewal in Palermo. The “supernatural beauty” expressed through the songs, the liturgy, the prayers and fraternal joy overwhelmed me.
The InterPENbook 1/2008, published by PEN Trieste along with Hammerle Editori in Trieste and with the support of the Province of Trieste, was produced in cooperation with PEN Slovenia. It is a collection of selected works by 10 poets from each of the two Centres, all translated into the other language. The InterPENbook 2/2011, published in the same way, was produced – entirely at the expense of PEN Trieste – in cooperation with PEN Croatia.
IX. Las Conferencias regionales de PEN Trieste
The 1st Conference was held in 2006 and its theme was Elogio della Poesia (In Praise of Poetry). It was attended by the PEN Centres from Austria, Bosnia/Herzegovina, Czech Rep., Montenegro, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Italian and Rhaeto-Romanic Switzerland. Since our inception, we have participated in almost all Congresses starting from the PEN International Congress in Mexico City in 2003. We were then in Tromsø (Norway) in 2004, Bled (Slovenia) in 2005 and Berlin (Germany) in 2006. From 2003 to 2008, Patrizia Vascotto was an observer at the Translation and Linguistic Rights Committee (T&LRC) meetings in Ohrid (Macedonia). In more recent years, a formal contact process was launched. Two domestic airlines fly directly to Nuku Hiva from Papeete.
