Data communication is vital to our modern world. It connects us to the devices and services we depend on. It includes a variety of techniques and media which dictate how information is sent from one end to the next. Understanding how it functions allows us to design an efficient and reliable networks that offer the benefits of a greater network for enhanced efficiency and productivity for businesses and new innovations in automation.

Data communication is the transfer of data between computers over the medium or channel. This can be done over wire cables, satellite signal, radio frequency or wirelessly. A person or device that transmits data is known as the sender and the computer which receives the data is referred to as the receiver. In a network for data communication, more than two computers can be involved in the communication process.

Multiplexing and demultiplexing are useful technology for communication that allows multiple signals to be transmitted across the same medium at the same time, maximizing bandwidth usage and decreasing costs. Both processes require specialized equipment which can combine and separate signals. Custom integrated circuits are frequently employed to accomplish this task and are present in a variety of communications products that include phones, computers and printers.

Full-duplex is the method of data transmission that permits simultaneous two-way communication within two devices. This is a more complex mode than simplex transmission since it requires the ability to send and receive data simultaneously.
