The role of nonprofit boards is vital to the management of nonprofits. They’re responsible for strategic planning, oversight and accountability, and financial stewardship. The Board is accountable for ensuring that the organization is transparent with donors and members of the community. This is not a simple task. The Board has many responsibilities, which require a lot of time and effort from the board. It is essential to have the most qualified people on your Board.
A good board is made up of individuals with diverse backgrounds, abilities and perspectives that are in line with the mission of the organization. This will provide the Board with a broad base of knowledge and expertise to make informed decisions and guide the organization in the right direction. The Board must regularly assess its own performance and effectiveness, and provide regular training.
The Board must also be meticulous and comprehend the bigger picture. This means assessing how closely the financial activity is linked to the budget, looking at how much programs and services cost, and whether or not those costs are appropriate, and setting up appropriate internal controls to guard against loss, theft or confusion.
The Board should be prepared to serve as advocates and ambassadors of the organization. They should assist the Executive Director in creating and manage the public image for the organization. They should be available to the media and community, and ready to represent the organization if needed.
